Examples of Pilot Plants from EDIBON

These examples highlight our ability to customise solutions for a wide range of academic and industrial needs.

Advanced Carbon Capture by Adsorption: MOF4AIR Project

One of the most pressing challenges of our time is reducing carbon dioxide emissions from power plants and industries. IKAD International is proud to support EDIBON’s efforts in addressing this issue through the development of innovative pilot plants for CO₂ capture via adsorption, under the European Union’s MOF4AIR research project.

What is Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)?

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is a critical technology for reducing CO₂ emissions in industries such as steel, cement, chemicals, and fertilisers. It captures CO₂ at the emission source and prevents its release into the environment. In addition, technologies like Direct Air Capture and Storage (DACCS) and Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) remove historical CO₂ emissions from the atmosphere, helping achieve net-zero emissions goals.

MOF4AIR Pilot Plants

EDIBON’s Pilot Plants for CO₂ Capture via Adsorption are at the forefront of carbon capture technology, offering solutions to test and optimise MOF-type materials for industrial applications. These pilot plants have been meticulously designed to address the challenges of carbon capture while delivering significant environmental and operational benefits.

  • Efficient Carbon Reduction: These plants achieve a 95% reduction in CO₂ emissions from power plants and industries, contributing to a 40% reduction in overall greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Advanced Testing Capabilities: The pilot plants allow the testing of various adsorbent materials, including MOFs, resins, and amine-doped compounds, in different forms such as pellets, granules, and structured packings.
  • 100% In-house Expertise: EDIBON’s pilot plants are the result of comprehensive in-house research, design, and manufacturing capabilities. This end-to-end approach ensures the highest quality standards, unmatched flexibility, and seamless integration of advanced technologies.
  • Optimised Operation: With EDIBON’s proprietary SCADA system, the pilot plants offer unparalleled flexibility to adjust and monitor key variables, ensuring maximum efficiency and performance.
  • Low Environmental Impact: The design incorporates eco-friendly technologies, including low GWP refrigerants, high-efficiency motors, thermal insulation, and regeneration systems for reduced environmental impact.
  • Cost-effective and Portable: The plants are designed for easy transportation and installation, with a plug-and-play approach that minimises costs.

Applications and Locations

The MOF4AIR pilot plants have been deployed in renowned facilities to validate their effectiveness and versatility:

  • Technology Centre Mongstad (Norway): A test centre for CO₂ capture technologies.
  • Tupras Refinery in Izmit (Turkey): A facility optimising carbon capture in the oil and gas sector.
  • Solamat-Merex Waste Treatment Centre (France): A plant integrating CO₂ capture into waste management processes.

Each plant captures CO₂ directly from industrial chimneys, processing exhaust gases through a series of pre-treatment stages to adjust pressure, temperature, humidity, and contaminant levels before adsorption. The core of the system is a pressure swing adsorption process that operates continuously, ensuring high recovery and purity rates.

Comprehensive Process Control with SCADA

EDIBON’s SCADA system provides robust control options for these pilot plants:

  • On-site Control: An HMI interface located in the control room enables easy operation and data storage.
  • Remote Management: Operators can control the plant remotely through an internet connection using EDIBON’s SCADA software.
  • OPC Server Integration: Seamless integration with client platforms ensures comprehensive monitoring and control of all plant variables.

The SCADA system is designed to allow future expansions and modifications, ensuring long-term adaptability without reliance on third-party solutions.
